The temple is historically significant because it is believed to be the site where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married. According to Hindu mythology, their divine wedding was solemnized in the presence of Lord Vishnu as the officiating priest. This is why the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, despite its connection to Shiva and Parvati. The name "Triyuginarayan" derives from the belief that the sacred fire at this temple has been burning for "three yugas" or three epochs—Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Dvapara Yuga—and will continue to burn in the current Kali Yuga. The eternal fire, known as the "Akshaya Agni," is kept burning in the courtyard, symbolizing the continuity of time and the sanctity of the temple. The temple is built in a North Indian architectural style and resembles the Kedarnath Temple in its design. Over centuries, Triyuginarayan has become a key pilgrimage site, especially for couples who come here to seek blessings for a harmonious marriage.Additionally, the temple is surrounded by sacred water bodies, such as the Brahma Kund, Vishnu Kund, Rudra Kund, and Saraswati Kund, which are considered to have purifying properties.

The temple is believed to be built by Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century Hindu philosopher and reformer, who established the four cardinal monasteries in India. The temple has a similar architecture to that of Badrinath temple, another important shrine of Lord Vishnu. The temple has a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) where the idol of Lord Vishnu is enshrined, and a Mandapa (assembly hall) where the devotees can sit and pray.
